Based just outside Washington, DC, Janet Riley is an expert communicator and leader with extensive experience in crisis planning and response, executive communications, media strategy and high-stakes media appearances, public speaking, message development, panel moderation and expert facilitation.
For nearly three decades, she led the meat industry’s response to high profile issues, from the first case of BSE or ‘Mad Cow Disease,’ to food safety, nutrition and animal welfare controversies. She has been interviewed by major media outlets throughout North America.
Janet’s wit and creativity are boundless. She has been recognized with Quote of the Year from ESPN.com and invited to appear as the “Queen of Wien” on major TV shows including The Martha Stewart Show, The Daily Show and The Colbert Report.
In collaboration with animal welfare and autism expert Dr. Temple. Grandin, Janet helped change the meat industry’s approach to measuring and improving animal welfare through objective scoring. She is featured in the forthcoming documentary about Dr. Grandin, “The Open Door.”
For 28 years, Janet led communications, membership and professional development at the North American Meat Institute in Washington, DC. She also founded and served as President of the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council. As vice president of communications and public affairs at the Canadian protein company Maple Leaf Foods Inc. (TSX: MFI), she led communications when the company became world’s first major carbon neutral food company. Janet also served the American Health Care Association, where she launched a community relations program and led media relations.
Janet earned her bachelor’s at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism in Evanston, Illinois, and her master’s in organizational development and leadership at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is a Certified Association Executive by the American Society of Association Executives and a certified Nutrition and Wellness Educator by the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences.
Janet and her family live in Silver Spring, Maryland, where she engaged in her local and national community. She has volunteered with Boy Scouts of America for 20 years and is currently affiliated with Troop 209 Silver Spring. She is a trained volunteer with Braver Angels, a national organization dedicated to depolarizing what has become a deeply divided nation. In addition, she volunteers with So Others Might Eat in Washington, DC.
